Student Laptop Policies and Restrictions
CCPS places restrictions on student devices for the purpose of keeping students safe on the internet and on-task in the classroom. This document contains a list of policies and restrictions in place on student devices supplied by CCPS.
Policies
Policy | Reason for the Restriction |
Students can't install or run any software that is not approved | Prevents students from installing unwanted software, such as games, social media, chat apps, VPNs, etc. |
Students can't change certain Windows system settings | Prevents students from bypassing web filtering. |
Students can't change their power/sleep settings | Prevents issues related to incorrect power/sleep settings (such as draining the battery or not getting updates) |
Firewall settings prevent access to certain local IP addresses on the CCPS network | Prevents access to CCPS infrastructure such as routers, security cameras, services not used by students, etc. |
Phone-PC linking is disabled | Prevents students from linking their cell phones to their CCPS laptop. |
Taskbar notifications are disabled | Interferes with testing |
Students can't access the Microsoft Store | Prevents students from installing unwanted software, such as games, social media, chat apps, VPNs, etc. |
Students can't login with a personal Microsoft account | Prevents non-school-related distractions. |
Students can't login with a personal Gmail account | Prevents non-school-related distractions. |
Students can't change their password | Ensures that staff always know the password and prevents students from locking themselves out. |
Chrome dinosaur game is disabled | Game |
Chrome/Edge QUIC protocol is disabled | Bypasses web filtering |
Chrome/Edge built-in DNS / DNS-over-HTTP is disabled | Bypasses web filtering |
Chrome/Edge guest mode is disabled | Used for hiding web browsing activity. |
Chrome/Edge incognito mode is disabled | Used for hiding web browsing activity. |
Students can't delete their browsing history in Chrome or Edge browsers | Used for hiding web browsing activity. |
Students can't install Chrome/Edge extensions that are not approved | Prevents students from installing unwanted software, such as games, social media, chat apps, VPNs, etc. |
Chrome/Edge home page is set to home.campbell.k12.va.us and can't be changed | Provides a standardized starting page with resources used for instruction. |
Student internet access is restricted using Securly | Prevents access to inappropriate websites and compliance with law. |
Exceptions to these policies
- 12th Grade students are allowed to login to personal Gmail/email for the purpose of preparing for college/work life after high school.
- Certain exceptions may be made because of an IEP.
Due to the constantly changing nature of technology, we can't guarantee the list is 100% accurate at all times.
